Maya Dekla is a sixteen-year-old psychic whose life is beyond predictable. She knows what’s going to happen every minute of the day and, as a Keeper, it’s her job to make sure all goes as planned. Dull, dull and more dull.
Maya has never once been surprised. That is, until Kai Green walks into her high school—but not into her visions of the future.
Kai is magnetic, mysterious….and Maya’s natural enemy—a Bender. While Keepers ensure that time moves forward as planned, Benders live to change the past. Keepers stand for order and duty; Benders live for chaos and danger.
When these mortal enemies two fall in love, time itself hangs in the balance.
IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOUNTAIN
The 1964 school year is almost over, and seventh grader Esther Appleton is worried about trying out for cheerleading and protecting her younger siblings from her mother’s mercurial moods. But when a detective comes to Esther’s school claiming he is her uncle, she is devastated to learn that her name is actually Esther Kurkinowski.
According to the detective, Esther’s mother ran away with her as a baby, leaving her biological father and his family to think both she and her mother had died. To keep her mother out of jail Esther must move from her home in Ohio to her Jewish father's family's New York mountain resort. As Esther navigates her new family's strange customs, religion and expectations she works to unravel the mystery of why her mother left. The answers lead to unexpected family connections, friendships and decisions about who she is, what her responsibilities are to the world beyond her doorstep and who she wants to become.
